The Gear

This is where we tell all about the junk we are traveling with. I know guys who have gone hitchhiking around Europe with as little as one satchel and an open mind. With less stuff than you have with you every day. It is possible. Everything is possible.

But planning a God only knows how long of a trip around the world, it takes more than that. Neither one of us is all that much into owning things or having stuff – which is good – but obviously we will be carrying what ever is necessary with us. Luckily enough, we started training the day we started traveling together. And we will continue training for the next year or so.

It all starts with a backpack. On my first trip to Asia I had a 40 litre Fjällräven which gave me a lot of perspective on what I really need and what I really want. It was too small, not too adaptable, it was heavy even for a pack so small and it lacked a lot of the qualities I wanted for it to have and what I would`ve needed. I was lucky though as it was borrowed, not bought by me.

Right before leaving for Finland I bought a 58-litre Osprey Exos 58 from a mall in Chatuchak, Bangkok. It has proven out to be perfect or pretty close. With a superlight build it only weights around 1.3 kilos and it does all the tricks it needs to do. Only downside is that it is not waterproof.

When we moved to Malta I had that and a 28-litre Nike pack which now is to be buried after serving for about 5 years. Saara had two uncomfortable, cabin luggage sized.. rectangular thingies with her. You can`t travel with that. We were in luck as one of those molded during our first winter in Malta, so she had to buy an actual backpack too.

Hers is even better than mine, it`s a 50-litre North Face Alteo 50 which by all means is the best backpack I`ve seen so far. I wish mine would`ve got stolen or burnt or something so I could buy one of those. Saara was thinking about buying a bigger one before The Departure but I absolutely killed the idea. You don`t need more. When it comes down to capacity, your life is or at least it should be, less than 60 litres.

That`s the starting point. Certain things you bring along no matter what, big or small you decide. On this page we`ll go through all we`ve got when traveling and by all I mean ALL. We`ll make a list and tell why we have whatever we have with us and why you should do things differently.
